Thank you all for joining! We're really glad to have you and hopefully we'll have some more on their way. Assuming that you all know the basic info available in the navigation, if you have any other questions feel free to ask here or on the FaQ! If we don't know the answer it gives us a chance to work one out.
Introductory Plot: "Psychic Flatulence"
In our first news post (which you can ICly respond to and make comment threads off of like you can comment to web articles, though Jeffers himself won't respond), there's mention of an outbreak of a minor illness, the Neuralflu...
"Symptoms of the Neuralflu include headaches, sinus pressure, and a desaturation of colors. Those infected also become prone to psychic flatulence, colloquially known as "brainfarts", where someone in close proximity may occasionally hear one of your thoughts. The effects of psychic flatulence can be mitigated by the wearing of a tinfoil hat."
Your characters can have random thoughts broadcast to people nearby if they're afflicted. This means the other person can maybe catch the Neuralflu too (but they don't have to). This will be logged down as recurring illness for anyone new that wants to come in and catch it. For people that do get it, they'll have seasonal (four month) immunity after it passes.
Getting to Know You This is both a plotting post for our first event and a way to introduce yourselves. Since some people will have had characters meet in previous games, it's alright if players assume their characters have been here for up to a month and have met (this counts threads on the Test Drive). Meetings in enough games can get repetitive, even if they're not CRAUs. This is mostly for people whose characters haven't formally been introduced, though, and will count for the first full week of people joining (new members will be directed back to this post). So you can discuss how your characters met/know each other/have CR here. Or you can work out who you'd like to meet!
So go on and introduce yourselves and say a little bit about who you're dragging in. Also remember the jobs listings, because knowing who does what is going to be really helpful in our planning.
HI! I am Binky! I am the person here who keeps lists and punches HTML in the face! I am also one of the people that helps concoct the plots. Hello!
I have two characters:
Niko Bellic is the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto IV. For a GTA guy he's actually not all that bad and has been kicked around by life a lot. A lot. But he's pretty friendly even with his inclination to constantly get himself into trouble. He comes from post game after the "Revenge" ending.
Agent K is the deuteragonist of the Men in Black movies (because face it, the movies are about Jay). I just have him on patrol right now. He'll be looking like a blues brother for this intro plot because he's going to buy a fedora and line it with tinfoil. He comes from not long after MiB II and is from the history where he killed Boris the Animal at Cape Canaveral.
I would really like some CR with Kay that's basically people he can quietly sit beside at the diner and eat by. Just "sit in the same vicinity/possibly say 'mornin' at each other" CR. And I'm open to threading either off anyone and everyone. Niko will probably have a lot of really dumb/hilarious thoughts, but occasionally an angsty one will pop up.
Hello everyone! I'm Karin, and these are my two losers for this game:
George Smiley—this guy here—from John le Carré's spy novels. Mostly the Karla trilogy, but Call For the Dead, A Murder of Quality, and The Spy Who Came In From the Cold figure in his background too. He comes from just after the end of the third Karla novel, Smiley's People. He's been here about a week, and is comfortably ensconced in the role of assistant manager at an antiquarian bookstore (taking suggestions for names). But really this is a secondment, and his primary employer is the Security Staff, who cajoled him into being an investigator. No one knows this yet.
Una Persson (una_persson), from a crapload of novels by Michael Moorcock. No, really, it's terribad. She comes from a point shortly after the end of the novella "The Flaneur des Arcades de l'Opera", for what that's worth in her extremely non-linear timeline. She's a time-travelling adventuress and woman of the world, and generally game for any kind of adventure. Still trying to figure out a job for her. She's a shiny new arrival more or less as of yesterday.
Smiley is going to be super-closemouthed about his background as a spy—if asked, he will admit only to having been a civil servant in the Foreign Office back where he came from. I'd like someone to get the truth out of him eventually, though—perhaps the Neuralflu can come into that? I don't think Una will catch it it's too early in the game for me to be messing with her head, but she's available to catch anyone else's random thoughts.
Narvin: I'm going to say that Narvin's been at Blackstaff for two weeks. To anyone who asks why he accepted the travel agent's invitation, he just says that he's "on holiday." He has very definitely not told anyone the he's a spy, and he hasn't said that his last job title was "Chancellor," but he may have mentioned working for a government agency and that he recently assisted in some difficult diplomatic negotiations back home.
He works in the research center, although he had no archaeology training at all and has no interest in 90% of the artifacts, no interest in gems, pots, golden statues, or ruins. The 10% he is interested in is the alien technology, and if asked about his qualifications as a researcher he'd say that he was trained and worked as a computer and technology specialist on Gallifrey in his universe. He is frustrated that he's not allowed to disassemble the ancient artifacts so he can properly see how they work.
He is also probably secretly collecting information on everyone. (Not trying to bug hotel rooms yet, but he's paying attention to who's around and who they are, trying to assess possible threats, possible allies, where people's personal levers might be should he need them, etc.)
(I haven't decided yet whether he'll catch Neuralflu, but right now I'm leaning towards "probably.")
Bertie Wooster has been at Blackstaff for a month. He is not working and has no job. He sometimes watches other people work, though, and that's plenty exhausting for him.
Bertie is outgoing and has probably tried to introduce himself and strike up at least a small conversation with everyone he's come across. And this Jeffers chap in the tiny cinema screen reminds him of someone...
He is definitely going to catch a case of the Neuralflu.
Oh, also! Hi, I am Rafe and I play Narvin (Time Lord spy from Doctor Who spin off) and Bertie Wooster (from Jeeves and Wooster). I'm also a modly type creature.
Edited (Fixing everything multiple times but eventually I will stop editing) 2014-06-12 20:33 (UTC)
I want to throw both of my characters at Smiley. (I'm entertained by the idea of Smiley and Narvin being all "I'm just a bookseller." "I'm just a technician." at each other.) And it occurred to me that Smiley and Bertie's birth years are not all that far off all things considered. (15 years or so difference)
Smiley and Narvin must meet. This is a law of the universe.
He will be initially suspicious of the extent to which Bertie appears to be a harmless boob. Finding out that these suspicions are basically completely unwarranted will be fun.
"Pestered" meaning it wouldn't take much to get Niko to go play darts. But yup! And he probably feels similarly sorry for Bertie's mental situation. This is why Boone can never get away with saying he's dumb around Niko here. He'll never believe it.
Yup! Probably some in passing. In that "I sure did kill another giant spider today. Yay dead giant spiders."
Smiley actually has very little patience for stupid, hearty aristocrats, but he's generally too polite/socially anxious to tell them to go away. So obviously Bertie must be inflicted on him often.
Hello I'm Rae! I'll be bringing in just this grumpy Gus here:
Charon is a companion character in the game Fallout 3. If you don't know anything about the game all you really need to know is that it's post apocalyptic, takes place way in the future, but everyone in it is culturally stuck in the past (40's/50's to be exact). Charon is a ghoul -- basically a result of being exposed to deadly amounts of radiation without dying. He's also one of the lucky ghouls who have been alive since before the bombs fell, which is over 200 years ago, so he's got a bit of a "I don't have time for this shit" attitude, oops. I'm going to say he's been around for a little over a week now working patrol, so some peeps might notice the 6ft zombie-dude walking around looking like all business. He's not very chatty and probably replies to a lot of attempts at conversation with a grumble. Also he doesn't sleep, so he's likely out and about working practically all the time.
I would love for some CR that's willing to push for Charon to be more social and to do things that don't involve work, even if it's just...sitting down at a place and having a drink. Also would love CR that is just as serious and no nonsense as Charon is. Grumpy bros, silent bros, someone to somehow get him into trouble because he's totally used to that (coughLONEWANDERERcough). Or anything really. So yeah, hi!
Also I got this guy who has very angry thoughts about Russians, so if Smiley ever wants to find out how the Cold War ended in another timeline (basically the same way) Niko can fill him in. IDK how it'd ever roll around to that in conversation but he tends to have a lot of opinions about it.
Hi! I'm Natalia, and this is my first journal game, so currently I'd prefer to build some CR with experienced players for the first week or so.
Wander Is a seasoned space traveler, so he has lots experience in interacting with species he's never met before. He's extremely friendly and most likely just walked up to everyone for a quick chat during the few days he's been here. He doesn't have a job here yet, and mostly has been exploring the area around the resort building.
Since Wander is an idealist and romantic to the core, sometimes to the point of detriment to himself, I would love to have CR with someone with a less optimistic worldview.
I'm not sure if Wander should catch the Neuralflu or not, but I think that once he hears that tinfoil hats protect against the virus, he'll get to working on crafting a bunch of these hats and distributing them.
I might say that Niko probably started saying hello to Charon almost because it was funny. "Hello!" "/grumble/ /walk on/" But has only, over the past couple of days sort of started feeling sorry for the guy and is about to get to the point of, "Hey, where are you from, anyway?"
I really like it when Smiley can find out about the end of the Cold War, so I am up for this. (Smiley's own thoughts on Russians are not as angry as they used to be.)
Bertie has probably screamed at least once upon seeing Charon. I'm sorry Charon. (But once he gets over it, he's good for chatting at even unsociable people.)
And Narvin is another really damn old grumpy workaholic who appears to barely sleep. (But his poor social skills range somewhat towards the "offending people and making enemies" side rather than just grumpy and unsociable, so it's a toss up whether they could be grumpy bros or if throwing their grumpy selves together would just lead to mutual dislike.)
Narvin here is very much the opposite of an idealist and romantic. Cynical, snarky, and pragmatic to the point of ruthlessness all the way. But he can also be an...um...unlikable bastard who tends to develop negative CR (basically, negative CR is IC for him). So if you'd like someone cynical and pragmatic, but less of a dick than Narvin for Wander's first encounters, I'd totally understand.
One of Wander's goals in life is to make other people happy, and he would be more than willing to cheer up this grumpy-looking ghoul by any means! He'll first be kind of pushy about Charon needing to socialize more, but if you're willing to develop CR enough, he'll become more understanding of Charon's comfort zone.
I have an optimist that isn't an idealist and is very used to aliens (Agent K) and I have a very cynical world-loathing hitman that happens to like socializing (Niko B). >.>
And most of the ones I know that joined are experienced!
Oh my god that's hilarious, let that be a thing. Charon's grumbling replies probably almost sound like some kind of greeting but mostly seems like a random noise.
