OOC: Blackmoon

OOC: Blackmoon

The celebration of a yearly resort festival is about to get underway.

The Story of Blackmoon...

The original settlers of Quadratus weren't expecting giant spiders when they first began surveying the area. They arrived during the day, so everything seemed peaceful until night came, when the spiders turned violently aggressive. No one knows why the absence of sunlight triggers the change, and no one has figured it out. There isn't enough funding support to bring in an xenobiology specialist with an expertise on entomology; currently all such subject authorities are focused on the Kaiju/Arachnid war and lesser parties haven't been able to make much sense of the creatures' anatomy. One of the more far-fetched theories is that they were genetically engineered as nighttime guardians by the original inhabitants of the world as they don't seem interested in attacking the local wildlife, just outsiders. Others simply believe that most of the local wildlife has developed defense mechanisms that researchers haven't identified yet.

As time passed, the original settlers discovered that an eclipse would be coming, that the sun would gradually be blocked for four days and they would have to deal with enemies in that time period. Construction of the initial fence immediately started. Then the resort and its forcefield. The town expanded from there, the fence expanding with it, patrols were assigned to kill any spiders that breached the barrier. Construction was completed and safety measures were in place long before the eclipse occurred, so rather than a violent battle visitors and new settlers came to see the event for themselves, on a beautiful world where the skies were mostly free of light pollution.

The Celebration of Blackmoon...

For many years now Blackway and Blackstaff Resort celebrate the event with food, discounts among venders, a parade, and other personal parties.

Many venues will hold parties each night of the event and stores offer sales for visitors. The fence is closed so that inhabitants can't exit into the dangerous outside, and anti-spider turrets are armed. While they recognize the shape of spiders, they have relatively simple AIs and the Resort doesn't want to be responsible for any accidents involving people wandering out and getting between the barrel and an enemy, therefore they're only active for this sort of occasion.

Patrols are still expected to keep an eye out for criminal activity, since much of the town will be dimmer. On the outskirts of town, people may bang pots and pans and make noise on occasion to "scare the spider in the sky away" and keep it from eating the moon, a tradition held by the original settlers (and to the annoyance of wealthier new ones). Others may kiss their sweetheart during the actual eclipse, so it may be uncomfortable for people with issues about public displays of affection. Some of the sentient species that are sensitive to sunlight will be much more active and species that glow in the dark will wander the streets and sidewalks.

During the parade, there are costumes meant to be operated by multiple people who perform a spider-dance (reminiscent of the Lion Dance and the Dragon Dance), and small prizes are distributed to the crowd. At the height of the Eclipse a gathering is held in the resorts gardens, with free food and drinks, and lights are lowered everywhere to enjoy the sky in all its beauty.

(Just ignore the sound of the fence's defense systems.)

This is a planning post for the event. We're also taking recommendations over whether people would want individual posts or group ones. It begins on the M6 D14 (July 10th) and ends on M6 D17 (July 13th). This is just an opportunity to build some mellow, getting to know each other CR before more of the good stuff hits, so plan away.
