Test Drive

Test Drive

Ladies and gentlemen and others, robots and augments, cybernetic lifeforms and entities of all sorts, if I may please have your attention for just a moment, we at the Blackstaff Resort need your assistance.

Our lovely little town is under threat of attack, but with your help we can both prevent further harm. These artificially spawned creatures could be described as zombies, and unfortunately they are infectious to the indigenous populations of this universe. You brave souls have the great fortune of being immune to their bites. Therefore, your assistance would be most invaluable in this endeavour. You could potentially save the poor citizens who have already been bitten and succumbed to the illness, return them to their healthy state, as well as the ones still attempting to lead normal lives.

In return for your service, if you should volunteer, we will finance your room and board throughout your stay. Moreover, we will arrange for a specific request to be granted at the end of your contract. Should you wish to go to a universe where your parents still live, should you wish a custom home built to your specifications, should you wish to meet your favorite famous personality (current or historical), we will arrange any of this for you. So valuable to us are your efforts.

Please speak to a travel agent if you might be interested, and thank you for listening.

This is the Test Drive for the Last Resort. This test drive will be canon both if you're accepted, or if current players want to acknowledge a thread as part of their in game canon (almost like a 4th wall post). For more information on what's going on, here is our news broadcast and OOC post. If you get bored and want to follow up on some of the history? Check out the news tag.

Test Drive starters are required on applications.

Prompts

Recruitment

People need to be recruited from their home universes, so current and would be travel agents should stop in and convince them to come along for the ride. Because, really, who wouldn't want to deal with zombies?

Wrangling

Being able to one day save the infected, the ones that were once people, seems very likely according to the scientists in the lab and in the clinic. Therefore Jeffers has offered a sort of sancturary: rooms in his resort in a cornered off section specifically meant to hold those zombies so they don't walk out into daylight and die.

Imports have yet to catch the infection, or show no symptoms of having done so even months after being bitten. So during curfew hours the few straggling villager zombies (though they're often unfortunate criminals who were trying to sneak around or absent minded idiot vacationers) need to be captured intact. If they don't look like spawner zombies, then they're to be treated with care and moved to one of the rooms.

Before dawn, of course.

Extermination

Spanwer zombies, however, are fair game. And like with all hostiles in the world, they have a bounty on them. They're not much of a problem during the day, but outside the walls at night they litter the countryside as the spiders, the skeletons, and the creepers do.

Time Off

The odd thing is, during the day? The village doesn't seem to care that they're in constant danger. The sense of community is strong, and people seem bizarrely obsessed in coming and seeing the dangers. Tourists and sight-seers do business with the locals who are very happy to have it again. Senseless though it seems with the trouble of occasional shambling aggressors or quiet toodling green grenades, the people of blackstaff are conducting their lives as normal outside of their curfew.

But I don't want to be bait. Can't I have a bazookoid and shoot at them instead? We could be a team.

[He mimes shooting down zombies. His voice turns suddenly deep and Heroic as he imagines himself being like a great soldier. Minus the danger. In his fantasies, he never quite squares the part about being heroic with the part about not wanting to be anywhere near danger.]

Take that, you undead bastards!

And what exactly are the chances that you would be able to directly handle and aim a class 3 style energy burst weapon while being approached by multiple hostiles at a steady pace, while being aware of your surroundings and avoiding threatening the stability of architecture as well as immediate lives. As well as discern citizen zombies from actual- duck.

[He raises his gun again. Towards Rimmer.]

Treeline's already pretty far back. But we can see if it can be pushed back further. With everything literally crawling out of the shadows like that, we're going to need the wide open room to aim.

[At least the fence seems pretty good at stopping them. The skeletons can't fire arrows through anymore, either. But as Kay approaches the fence, a skeleton aiming at him hits a zombie.]

[And the zombie turns on it.]

[He has to pause and watch that, even if he's still holding his gun ready.]

[personal profile] penumbral 2015-12-12 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Evidently, the tree line isn't far enough back, if it's still a problem. But there isn't any reason to point that out, since Kay is agreeing with him, so Saïx simply lets the subject lie.

He is about to step forward to close the distance between himself and their next set of targets when... something else ridiculous happens. Kay is holding fire to observe, and Saïx follows suit. This is a matter of conserving energy. Allow the creatures to battle, and clean up once one of them has fallen. He rather expects the victor is going to be the skeleton, due to its superior range.

(In other words, he's lazy.)]

Saïx | Kingdom Hearts

[personal profile] penumbral 2015-12-12 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
[ wrangling ]

[Saïx is no longer having a good day.

Witness: Saïx, dressed in a black T-shirt, tucked into black pants, tucked into tall black boots, trying to lure someone wearing his black coat, with the hood up, across the bridge. He seems to be using himself as bait, especially if the bruises and bite marks on his arm are anything to go by.

He definitely doesn't look like he's having a good day.

Certainly, he could have grabbed the offending villager zombie by the arm and used a corridor of darkness to transport them to the quarantine room. But he learned, very quickly, the toll it takes on him to utilize them shortly after his arrival on this world. Corridors are no longer easy and convenient to use; they are positively exhausting. And it's midday. It's his lunch break. Saïx has another five hours of work to complete yet.

And so, it has come... to this. Saïx, with a great deal of effort and an irritating amount of being gnawed on, managed to wrap the zombie best he could in his Organization coat. With the length of the body and the sleeves, as well as the hood up, it pretty well keeps the zombie covered -- and, thus, safe from the sun. Now, all he has to do is escort the damn thing to the resort.

On foot.

The zombie has officially gotten Too Close, so it's time to move. Saïx dares to look away from it long enough to make sure he isn't going to trip over anything as he takes several more steps back... but therein lies his mistake. Because, of course, as soon as he looks away from the creature, it gets distracted. By another possible food source who doesn't keep slipping out of its grasp (namely: You, whoever You are).]

Do not, [Saïx growls, as if the zombie might obey.

It doesn't. It continues lumbering towards the other passerby or observer. He snaps his gaze in that direction, scowl intensifying.]
Either help, or find another way around.

[At least they learn a little something. As Kay is watching, he climbs up one of the crows nests that let you fire over the fence. The Zombie bites the skeleton, as it reaches it. The teeth crunch the bone, grind into it- it's no wonder their bites are so serious even without the worry of infection.]

[But the skeleton does get that last shot in, and the zombie collapses. From where Kay is now, he can pick it off.]

The creepers don't seem to notice when the skeletons shoot them. This is a new one. [He calls down to Saïx.]
penumbral: (neutral ☾ listening)

[personal profile] penumbral 2015-12-13 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
[Hmmm. Saïx tries to come up with a reason as to why that may be, but he can't. There are Heartless that are immune to specific types of magic, but the skeletons' bows don't seem to have any magical properties altogether. Unless creepers are like Large Bodies?]

Are creepers resistant to all physical attacks? Or only the skeletons'?
most_feared: (k - pensive)

[personal profile] most_feared 2015-12-13 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
They're not resistant. They just don't care. The skeletons would attack what's attacking it. Same with the zombies. But creepers only give a shit about us.

They're probably the ones you'll have to look out most for.

[He scans the field outside, looking at what comes skittering through occasionally. Just some sparse zombies, skeletons. Creepers are hard to immediately see, though.]

Over there. By the treeline. There's a creeper. [So he'll know what one looks like.]
penumbral: look i'm punny (neutral ☾ hooded gaze)

[personal profile] penumbral 2015-12-13 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
[Ah, so a different definition of "not noticing" than he was expecting. He inclines his head in acknowledgement.

He lifts his eyes and scans the trees in the direction Kay mentioned. It takes him a moment to spot it. At least the Heartless have the courtesy of having yellow, glowing eyes.]

I see it. [And he keeps his eyes on it.] What makes them especially dangerous?
most_feared: please don't use, i paid for these (k - interrogating)

[personal profile] most_feared 2015-12-13 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
They blow up.

[His tone reaching a very simple, "Yup, they sure do that."]

No provocation, either. If they see you, they get close and blow up. No traces left. They degrade immediately if you shoot 'em.
penumbral: (lineface ☾ really.)

[personal profile] penumbral 2015-12-13 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ah.

[And that's a tone of, "of course they do."]

I imagine that makes studying them difficult. [Which means they'll probably continue being mysteries. How unfortunate.] And they show no interest in those native to this world?
arnold_j_rimmer: (reading)

[personal profile] arnold_j_rimmer 2015-12-15 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you mean have I passed my Firearms Proficiency Exam, as required by Space Corps Directive seven-zero-three-fffffffffffffffffffff--

[Rimmer had been hoping to show off for Kay his knowledge of Space Corps Directives, but half-way in the pressure started feeling very test-like. And then Kay was pointing a gun at him, and it was just like one of his nightmares where the exam official puts a gun to his head and tells him that he has to pass or else the brain pan gets it (only in that nightmare the testing official was wearing pink samurai armour for some unknown reason), and...it's all too much.

Rimmer faints.

It's basically like ducking. He's out of the way of Kay's shot, in any case.]
most_feared: (k - pensive)

[personal profile] most_feared 2015-12-16 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
They tried, but it didn't work out too well. What they did manage to figure out is that the little bit of residue they leave behind is something similar to gunpowder.

[Kay comes down from the crows nest. Picking off more people would be easy, but he figures that'll do for now. Most will burn up in the morning, and as for the spiders-]

The spiders will calm down in the daylight. If they're not inside, no reason to go out of your way.
most_feared: please don't use, i paid for these (k - disbelief)

[personal profile] most_feared 2015-12-16 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
[Good enough.]

[Kay shoots, and as usual makes a mess.]

[He looks down at Rimmer.]

[Looks around.]

[Back down at Rimmer.]

[Should he do something with him?]

[Probably.]

[So Kay picks him up fireman style, and starts hauling him back to the resort. Poor dumbass is going to manage to get himself even more killed.]
penumbral: (neutral ☾ listening)

[personal profile] penumbral 2015-12-16 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Understood. [It's almost strange, having someone offer information without Saïx having to pry for it. Recon missions where it's permissible to interact with the locals are rare enough, but ones where they openly share intel... Kay may not a native to this world, but he may as well be for Saïx's purposes.

With Kay descending and evidently turning away from the fence, Saïx takes it to mean their job is done for the night. He dismisses his claymore. In an instant, the large weapon flashes with a large blue-white glow, and then disappears. (Were there strange, thorny dark swirls around that flash, too? Yeah. Yeah, there were.)

Saïx then also pauses, glancing over his shoulder at the zombies they've slain. The bodies are still there. Of all the things to strike him as strange, here...]

[personal profile] most_feared 2015-12-16 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oddly enough, Kay seems to take the weapon's disappearance in stride, just checking the power levels on his own shotgun. As he is, one of the dogs (the local dogs, the big dogs, the ones that violently defend their masters) comes around the corner of a building to stare at them.]

[Then it grabs one of the zombie bodies and picks it up in strong jaws, and drags it off.]

[At least nothing goes to waste.]

[Still freely offering information, Kay adds-] Those get way more attached to their owners than Earth dogs do. Convince 'em they like you and they'd tear through anything that came at you. [Kay just can't get attached to animals, knowing the asshole alien dog that he does.]
penumbral: (default ☾ list of people i like: 1. dogs)

[personal profile] penumbral 2015-12-16 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[...

Although Saïx was originally staring after the bodies because it has been a long time since he has seen true death, he is now continuing to stare as the dog emerges. He doesn't stop staring after it has disappeared again with its prize in tow and Kay provides more explanations.

Even his response is a tad delayed.]
I see, [he says mildly, though his gaze is rather intense. He makes a mental note to look more into these dogs. If he could win the loyalty of one, then it would be...

... useful. Perhaps.

He finally looks away.]
How intelligent are they?

As far as dogs go, I guess. They don't chew your shoes and they do what they're told. I don't think they'll be writin' Shakespearean sonnets but they got the important parts down.

[Which he guesses is better than most of the dogs he's met. Frank especially.]

They like about any type of meat. Even old meat. They like skeleton bones, too.

[Well, Saïx did look a little bit interested there.]
penumbral: (neutral ☾ sigh.)

[personal profile] penumbral 2015-12-16 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Oh, look. More information he didn't say he wanted. How convenient. Saïx you aren't even going to think about how you were apparently transparent? No? Well okay then.

Saïx inclines his head in a silent show of appreciation.]
Then they would be more competent than my... co-workers. [If someone talks about you behind your back, but they're in an alternate universe, will you still sneeze?]

They'll be more competent than about half the people you meet here. [He makes a motion around them.]

Just because Jeffers recruits from different places doesn't mean he aims for a particularly strategic minded skillset. That doesn't mean they can't do anything but some of these people get around about as well as the shamblers.

[Rimmer straightens out his uniform once he's on the ground, makes sure all the seams line up within two millimetres, the hem of his puffy coat between three and five centimetres from his natural waist. All right. All tiptop and in fighting form. Without the fighting.]

Suit up? [Rimmer brightens.] Does that mean I'm going to be promoted to a security officer? I do like the hats. Very manly. Never underestimate the effect of a good military beret, I always say. Like a good haircut, it's a signal to the enemy that this army is not to be trifled with. Like a brigade a Kingsnakes, flashing their bright colours.

[He thinks for a moment and a beret appears on his head. A blue, shimmery beret.]
